COPS Term 3

27/09/17 - COPS TERM 3

Self reflection

1.what are you taking action with and why.
I am continuing to use project based learning to integrate the different areas of maths for my learners. I have tweaked this since last term to make sure I am covering more strategy. I found although the children really enjoyed the bakery project and definitely learned a lot I struggled to make sure I was covering and 'ticking off' the knowledge they needed. To fix this I decided to give my children a quick one-on-one knowledge test and then integrate these gaps into the new project.
2.what new learning are you taking from all of this.
Project based learning is a really powerful tool for learners to see the links between maths and the real world. One of my challenges at the beginning of the year was around keeping my learners engaged in maths and the projects have definitely fixed that! I've also found doing a mix of project learning once a week with more traditional group sessions on one day and problem solving on the third maths day to be an easier way to cover things.
3.what are you noticing about your learners right now.
One of the challenges I'm finding with my learners is with the structure and dynamics of my maths group. At the start of the year we decided to stream our maths groups and have stuck with this all year. While this means targeted teaching happens easily a challenge I have is having rich maths discussions. I think my learners would benefit from some higher ability children to act as role models to lead these conversations and use the appropriate maths vocabulary. This could be something to look at in the future.
