Notes: Old system educated but compliant New system needs creative thinkers -esp. In a small country to compete on a world stage China vs NZ Need complex thinkers that can work through complicated problems that have more than one solution World is entering a creative phase. Need creative thinkers not compliant thinkers. Future trades are knowledge and creativity. Computer gaming could be a huge export but need kids to be flexible thinkers. High school prep vs primary - I think at pap st we encourage our kids to be creative problem solvers and minimise emphasis on testing - do high schools also do this? Is it too test driven? Risk of being wrong. "Being wrong is ok, it's stopping after you're wrong that's not ok" National system/government level of management. System is stacked against our poorest kids. Maths PLD

Notes: 3/5/14 - Marg Wright Numeracy PD Always use a maths starter to warm up brains, use  Maths Starter of the Day  as a possible tool. Can we use this in Google Docs somehow? Maintenance should include all aspects of strand and domains. How do we fit this in timewise? Maybe not every day…. Problem solving: Problem of the day: Group problem solving books Write up problems Think, pair share Record two different strategies This session has given me a lot to think about with maths in our room. We have a huge spread of levels from stage 2-3 to 6 so I feel I have been treading water (or attempting to!) for the past term and want to really shake up my maths teaching. Things I am going to try: -reinstating a maths working wall. I did this last year and it was great for the kids to refer to and add too. This PD has reminded me of the importance of these prompts. - re-evaluate the levels the kids are working at. Are we marking too hard/expecting too much? ...
