NOTES ON CORE EDUCATION MAORI LITERACY SESSION

Core education reflection Empowering kids to recognize their gifts – really powerful for Gabriel. Whare model – confidence down in academic areas effects everything. What is he good at and how often can he do it?? – interesting point – very able but doesn’t feel good about it. How can I boost this Hinegaro for Gabriel to gain confidence in his academic ability? Enabling Gabriel to be who/what he is. How can we enable him to gain his full potential? Gabriel –orator traditionally? Targeted education for speaking and confidence. Role in traditional society. Empowered because potential was noticed and grown and focused on. Can’t teach this way today but can we utilize strengths to teach skills they need? Use technology? For Gabriel his computer skills are a barrier for this but I would really like to try and find a way to use this to help him realize his potential. Blended learning – can we somehow record things and rewind to keep going over it until they get it (really great for ...

Clearview Observation

Observation at Clearview School Layout and resources In the middle school block they use cubbies for children’s bags and tote trays for their books and other belongings. Both of these storage spaces are kept inside the homebase classroom. In the senior school (yr 5/6) they have cupboards lining one wall of the shared space and each student has a shelf (3 to a cupboard) in which they keep their bag and all their belongings. Students then access these throughout the day as needed. After talking to a couple of the teachers the cupboards we definitely preferable as they kept all the students belongings in one place with a door, cubbies tended to overflow and spill on to the classroom floor. This is something interesting to consider as we move to change our classrooms into modern learning spaces. Could we install cupboards/lockers out on our deck area or behind our classrooms to free up space but have belongings secure? In the middle school classrooms are grouped into 3s with a...

Class structure 2015

In our syndicate meeting last week we were asked to think about the class structures for the middle school next year. We discussed a composite classes, teachers following students through the middle school, team teaching and different styles of classrooms. I would be really interested in trialling a combination of team teaching/an interchange system along with having different styles of classrooms. I think this would best address the needs of the students as well as capitalising on the many different strengths we have in our teaching team. I am open to the idea of composite or straight classes and quite like the idea of following a class through the middle school. I think this would give me a really clear understanding of how children progress through the middle school as well as an opportunity to work with a group of children for a two year period. I am interested to hear what my colleagues have to add next week!

Four Minute Walk Through

This walk-through I focussed on celebrating achievement and celebrating the children as individuals. I saw lots of different reward systems and individualised learning taking place. One thing I would like to try and incorporate in my classroom is a time to shine/star of the week idea. I would like each child to have their moment to shine and have their peers write/say nice comments about the child each week. I have seen several creative ways of displaying these thoughts. I would like to create a visual reminder for the classroom of each child but also I smaller keepsake version the child can take home and keep. I will implement this later this term/next term.
