Anxiety in Children

This week I have dealt with two separate children who were showing great anxiety at school. The first child was feeling overwhelmed by parents being away, friendship concerns and not wanting to let her parents down. After talking through all these worries I began reflecting on just how much some of our kids internalise. This child was discussing feelings and worries that were far beyond her years and feeling hopeless about how to make it all better. This led me to think about how to help anxious children moving forward. I have a real interest in mental health in children and lots of research shows that children who are anxious on any level may also suffer academically, wether at the time or over a period of time. As an adult I also know if I am feeling stressed or anxious often tasks don't get my full attention so how can we expect our kids to do this!
