Classroom environment

This afternoon in my room we moved all the desks against the walls in preparation for Drama tomorrow and wow the transformation was huge! My children were buzzing with how much space there was in the room and how much they liked the feeling of the room. This led to a very interesting discussion about the layout of our classroom and resulted in the children designing their own classroom layouts to trial this term. I also asked the children to write a sentence stating where their favourite working spot in the classroom was. After discussing this with the children we will be trialling a combination of the favourite few layouts from the children’s designs. Interestingly some children liked the idea of all working in rows, some liked groups and several wanted to try working by themselves. 4 minute walk through

I participated in my first 4MWT recently and found it an interesting and useful experience. I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to focus on in this walkthrough so decided to take it as an opportunity to see other areas of the school I have not had interaction with yet. Something that really stood out from my walkthrough was the continuity present across the school. This made me think about what I do in my classroom in regards to the school-wide initiatives (pathway, WALTs, learning progressions etc). I feel there are some aspects of this I do well such as having the pathway displayed prominently in my classroom and some aspects I could definitely improve. In the senior classrooms I saw the literacy learning progressions broken up in to overall snapshots of each level. Currently I have the large poster of the literacy learning progressions however feel this can be a bit overwhelming for students.
