If I was to summarise the key things I took away from this Professional Development what would they be and why?

  • Give things a go. We all have our own barriers, its important to identify these when learning something new.
  • Although our schools are hugely multicultural many of those people from other cultures have chosen to immigrate into New Zealand for our culture. We must protect and maintain our bicultural nature first and foremost.

  • Clothesline analogy - Clothes are verbs, nouns, adjectives/ Washing Line is sentence structure/ pegs are teaching strategies to teach language. Can we use this to increase how we teach and use Reo?

How has this professional development challenged my thinking?
This session with Core Ed made me think about how we are using Te Reo Māori as a school. I feel like many of us (myself included usually!) are at the 'clothes' stage of the learning progress, throwing one off nouns and commands to our students. How can we move on from this as a staff to hang out our washing. The facilitators talked about the challenges of learning and using Te Reo Māori when it is not prevalent in our society. How can we make Te Reo Māori more prevalent in our school so we all have more opportunities to practice? I don't want to add more workload to busy teachers, I need to do some thinking around how to do this effectively.
What aspects of my practice would I consider changing as a result of this professional development and why?
As a whole school I would like us to create our own version of the culturally responsive bingo activity. What, at Paparoa, do we value as culturally responsive in our environment. What knowledge and skills do all our staff need to hold? How can we share this with new and existing staff?
Can we translate our 'P' words into Te Reo Māori?

Pride = whakahī
Perseverance = hiringa
Partnership = rangapū
Participation = whai whaī
