Maths PLD

Notes:
3/5/14 - Marg Wright Numeracy PD
Always use a maths starter to warm up brains, use Maths Starter of the Day as a possible tool. Can we use this in Google Docs somehow?
Maintenance should include all aspects of strand and domains. How do we fit this in timewise? Maybe not every day….
Problem solving:
Problem of the day:
  • Group problem solving books
  • Write up problems
  • Think, pair share
  • Record two different strategies
This session has given me a lot to think about with maths in our room. We have a huge spread of levels from stage 2-3 to 6 so I feel I have been treading water (or attempting to!) for the past term and want to really shake up my maths teaching. Things I am going to try:
-reinstating a maths working wall. I did this last year and it was great for the kids to refer to and add too. This PD has reminded me of the importance of these prompts.
- re-evaluate the levels the kids are working at. Are we marking too hard/expecting too much?
- introduce elements of all areas of maths into a maintenance programme. I have been focusing predominantly on basic facts. I need to do some thinking around this as our maths time is already so short. How am I going to fit this in? Can it be part of our maths buddy homework programme?
