Spanish Club
During term 3 and 4 Sam and I started up a Spanish club. After several discussions we decided to open it up to years 2,3,4 with the hope of having the children continue on next year. In our first meeting we had a lot of interest with about 60 children coming along! Over the weeks this has reduced to a comfortable group of about 15-18 year two students. One problem we faced was the children having other commitments on at lunchtimes and not be able to continue with Spanish. When we start planning for next year this is something we will need to take into consideration. Overall the Spanish club has been really successful and the children are progressing really quickly. It is fantastic to see their engagement and enjoyment of learning a new language. Something I have thought about is trying to make our sessions more interactive and varied. We have both been searching for resources but have struggled to find activities and songs that are both level appropriate and achievable in the time we have. I would like to create a booklet for the children next year to take home and reinforce their learning with their families. I hope this will enable the children to learn to read and write Spanish as well as speak it!
This club has also been a great opportunity to team teach a subject and work through the challenges and successes of this together. We have decided to teach in a week-about rotation which has meant we both get equal opportunity and responsibility for running the club. On the week where I am not teaching my role is to support Sam and help implement his lesson. This model has worked well with clear communication between us about where we are going with our teaching. We try and plan together or run ideas past each other to make sure our lessons flow on from one another and build on the student's understanding from week to week.
